General António Xavier Correia Barreto founded the institution in 1911 to provide vocational training for children of Portuguese military personnel. It grew into an important center for technical and military education in the country.
The students here, known as Pilões, wear ceremonial blue uniforms with white plumes in their caps during formal occasions and live by the motto Querer é Poder. The community maintains its own traditions that reflect discipline and pride in military training.
