Convento de São Domingos de Benfica

Convento de São Domingos de Benfica is a Dominican convent and church built with a Latin cross floor plan that includes a single nave and a prominent transept. The interior features a barrel vault with coffered ceiling panels that create a layered, decorated overhead surface.

King João I of Portugal granted land in 1399 to establish a Dominican monastery at this site. The structure underwent major reconstruction between 1624 and 1632, creating the building that stands today.

The convent shaped the spiritual life of the neighborhood for centuries and displays remarkable altarpieces and sculptures created by Manuel Pereira that speak to its religious importance.
