Palace of the Marquises of Fronteira, 17th-century palace and National Monument in São Domingos de Benfica, Portugal
Palace of the Marquises of Fronteira is a 17th-century mansion in São Domingos de Benfica featuring expansive gardens decorated with Portuguese tiles, fountains, and hedges shaped to represent the four seasons. The grounds cover approximately 5.5 hectares of landscaped space.
The mansion was built between 1670 and 1673 for João Mascarenhas, the first Marquis of Fronteira, as recognition for his loyalty during the Portuguese Restoration War. Its design and decoration reflect the political victories of that period.
The Room of Battles contains detailed tile panels showing eight major conflicts from the Portuguese Restoration War, including the Battle of Montijo.
Visits require advance reservations, with guided tours available Monday through Saturday at set times. Plan ahead and check opening hours before your arrival to ensure a smooth visit.
The Gallery of Kings displays busts of Portuguese monarchs in chronological order while deliberately excluding three Spanish kings from the collection. This reflects an important political statement made during a time of independence struggles.
