Teatro Thalia, Historic theatre in São Domingos de Benfica, Portugal
Teatro Thalia is a historic theater building in Benfica featuring mirrored glass panels and yellow ochre concrete surfaces. The structure shows the original ruins integrated with new modern materials, creating a visible blend of old and new construction.
The theater was commissioned by the Count of Farrobo in 1820, but a fire in 1862 destroyed it and left it abandoned for over a century. The site remained untouched until restoration work began in the early 2000s.
The Latin inscription on the frieze shows how theaters were once seen as places for moral teaching and correction. Visitors can still read these words today and understand what role performance spaces held in public education.
The venue is open to the public and hosts scientific conferences, cultural events, and educational programs throughout the year. Check ahead before visiting to see what activities are happening, as access may depend on scheduled events.
During the 2012 renovation, the original ruins were deliberately used as forms for pouring new concrete, rather than being removed completely. This technique allows the old structure to literally show through the new surfaces.
