Farol da Mama

Farol da Mama is an upper light standing 15 meters tall on a round hill in Carnaxide e Queijas. The structure features a metal tripod framework supporting two observation galleries and a lantern at the top.

The first documented reference to this navigation aid goes back to 1607, when a structure already marked this strategic location near Lisbon's harbor. The current system has undergone several updates and improvements over the centuries.

The lighthouse sits within Serra de Carnaxide as a key part of Portugal's maritime navigation system. It helps ships find their way safely into the southern entrance of Lisbon's harbor.

The lighthouse is accessible from the surrounding hill and offers good views of the area. Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and limited access to certain parts of the structure.

The white-painted metal structure with its red spiral staircase resembles a space rocket ready for launch. This unusual design makes it instantly recognizable in the landscape.
