Senhora da Luz Lighthouse

Senhora da Luz Lighthouse is a stone structure featuring a hexagonal tower built on a square base as part of a two-story building complex. The tower rises approximately 15 meters and once guided ships approaching the harbor entrance.

Built in 1761, this was the first genuine lighthouse on the Portuguese coast, established after a 1758 decree by the Marquis of Pombal. Its construction marked the start of modern maritime safety measures for the region.

This lighthouse occupies a location surrounded by religious buildings, including nearby churches and chapels that highlight the connection between maritime life and faith. The presence of these sacred spaces reflects how coastal communities in Portugal once blended spiritual devotion with seafaring traditions.

The lighthouse is accessible via Rua do Marechal Saldanha, a street with numerous restaurants, hotels, and public transportation nearby. The area is easily walkable with convenient amenities for visitors.

A lightning strike in 1814 caused significant damage, prompting major repairs to the structure. After restoration, the lighthouse received a modern Fresnel lens in 1865 that greatly extended its signaling range.
