Felgueiras Lighthouse, Maritime navigation lighthouse in Foz do Douro, Portugal.
Felgueiras Lighthouse is a stone navigation beacon at the mouth of the Douro River with a hexagonal tower, red balcony, and lantern sitting about 10 meters tall. The structure marks where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean and remains a fixed point in the landscape.
Built in 1886, the lighthouse guided ships through dangerous coastal waters until its deactivation in 2009. It later reopened in 2021 to allow visitors to experience this historic navigation aid.
The lighthouse reflects Portuguese maritime craftsmanship with its granite masonry and traditional construction methods visible in every detail. The red balcony railing and careful stonework show the care that went into building safe navigation aids for seafarers.
The lighthouse is accessible near the river mouth and offers views where the waterway meets the sea. Visitors should prepare for coastal conditions, as the area can be windy and the ground uneven in places.
The lighthouse still operates its original foghorn system that once warned ships in bad weather. Since 1979, the equipment has worked remotely in coordination with the nearby Leça Lighthouse.
