Reitoria da Universidade do Porto, University headquarters and museum in Praca de Gomes Teixeira, Portugal
The Reitoria is the main building of the University of Porto featuring neoclassical architecture on Praca de Gomes Teixeira in the historic center. A large central courtyard connects administrative offices, museums, and academic spaces throughout the structure.
Construction began in 1807 under architect Carlos Amarante as an academy for naval and commercial studies, later evolving into a university. The unfinished building briefly served as a military hospital during the Porto siege of 1832-1833.
The building houses the Natural History and Science Museum with collections spanning geology, paleontology, zoology, archaeology, ethnography, and botany. These displays show how people and nature connected in Porto across different periods.
Visitors can walk through the museum spaces and explore the central courtyard to see different sections of the building. The best time to visit is in the morning or early afternoon when student activity is lighter.
The courtyard was designed as an artistic focal point and long served as a gathering space for academic events and student assemblies. Today it remains a quiet retreat in the midst of the busy city center.
