Jardim da Estrela, Public park in Estrela district, Lisbon, Portugal
Jardim da Estrela is a public park in Lisbon's Estrela neighborhood that covers about 4.6 hectares with winding pathways and ornamental water features. Exotic trees and sculptures dot the grounds, while an iron bandstand sits at the center as the focal point.
The park opened in 1852 as Lisbon was growing rapidly and the city needed recreational spaces for its residents. This project was part of broader efforts to modernize Lisbon during that era.
The iron bandstand in the center hosts concerts during the summer months when locals gather there. Regular craft fairs display handmade Portuguese products, bringing the community together.
The park sits across from the Basilica da Estrela and opens daily from 7 AM to midnight for visitors. Tram lines 25 and 28 pass nearby, making access straightforward and convenient.
For several decades until around the mid-20th century, the park kept a caged lion as an attraction for visitors. This unusual practice eventually gave way to the duck ponds you see today.
