Santa Maria Hospital, Medical center in Alvalade, Lisbon, Portugal
Hospital de Santa Maria consists of several buildings within the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte in the Alvalade neighborhood and provides medical care for the population of the Lisbon region. The complex includes emergency facilities, specialized wards and outpatient clinics that focus on different branches of medicine.
The architect Hermann Distel from Germany designed the complex, which opened on 27 April 1953 and was intended to contribute to the modernization of Portuguese healthcare in the postwar period. The hospital emerged as part of a plan to expand the medical infrastructure of the capital and introduce contemporary treatment standards.
The institution works closely with the medical faculty of the university and serves as a teaching hospital for future doctors. Students complete practical training phases here and researchers use the equipment for clinical investigations in the field of modern medicine.
The grounds are located near Cidade Universitária and can be easily reached by public transport. Visitors will find signposts inside the buildings that lead to the different wards and departments.
A laboratory for language research was founded here in 1970 and has since investigated language disorders associated with brain diseases. This facility is among the few centers in Portugal that specialize in neurolinguistic diagnosis and therapy.
