Prainha

Prainha is a black volcanic sand beach on Madeira's eastern coast, bordered by steep cliffs that frame the swimming area facing the Atlantic. The shoreline offers direct access to the water with a natural setting shaped by geological formations.

The beach was shaped by volcanic activity and geological processes that created the distinctive black sand surface. Its development into a bathing site followed the expansion of Caniçal's fishing port and growing maritime activity in the 20th century.

Local fishermen maintain their traditional practices near the beach, bringing fresh catches directly to the nearby restaurants specializing in seafood dishes.

The beach has changing rooms, sun loungers, and parking available for comfortable visits. Muralha's Bar near Rua da Pedra d'Eira serves regional meals and makes a convenient spot to eat near the shore.

The dark sand creates a striking contrast against the brownish surrounding landscape, setting it apart from the typically green vegetation seen across other Madeira beaches. This visual difference reflects the underlying volcanic geology that shapes this particular location.
