Torre de Dornes

Torre de Dornes is a five-sided stone tower that rises directly above the Zezere River, with straight walls that converge at the top and feature a bell installation. The structure displays a distinctive pentagonal shape that emphasizes its defensive design.

The Knights Templar built this defensive structure in the 12th century under Master Gualdim Pais to control the territory. The building was later modified in the 16th century with gargoyles added at its corners.

The entrance displays carved stone decorations with shields and military symbols that reflect the medieval defensive heritage of the region. These ornaments show how the structure represented local power and protection for those living nearby.

The tower is open to visitors Monday through Friday from 2 PM to 6 PM, with extended hours on weekends and holidays from 9 AM to 6 PM. It is best to check current times before your visit, as they may vary seasonally.

The tower contains reused funeral stones built into its interior walls, which came from an earlier time and were incorporated into the structure. These stone fragments provide clues about the long history of the site and how it was used differently over the centuries.
