Nossa Senhora do Pranto

Nossa Senhora do Pranto is a small community in Ferreira do Zêzere with the village of Dornes at its center, where traditional stone houses line narrow streets. The sanctuary church appears modest from outside but reveals a surprisingly spacious interior, with a pentagonal bell tower nearby that hints at its ancient origins.

The chapel was built on the orders of Queen Santa Isabel, who venerated a figure of Mary found in the Zêzere River region. From this early foundation, the place developed into a pilgrimage site that continues to attract the faithful today.

The place takes its name from the Virgin Mary, who was said to have been found in the bushes according to local legend, and this story continues to be passed down. The church remains the focal point for gatherings where residents and visitors come to light candles and offer prayers during celebrations.
