Igreja e Mosteiro da Cartuxa de Santa Maria Vallis Misericordiae

This Carthusian monastery in Oeiras comprises limestone structures, three-arched cloisters, and two bell towers rising above the Barcarena Valley. The complex includes a church, service buildings, and residential quarters arranged around the central courtyards.

The monastery was founded in 1594 through a land donation by Simao Rodrigues to Misericordia de Lisboa and received papal authorization in 1598. These early years established the Carthusian presence in Portugal during the late Renaissance period.

The monastery displays a blend of Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque styles visible across its church and associated buildings. These architectural layers show how artistic tastes changed during different periods of its use.

The site sits on Estrada do Murganhal and is accessible by bus lines serving the Oeiras area. Plan to explore on foot as the valley setting means you will need to navigate the grounds to see all parts of the complex.

This monastery is one of only two Carthusian communities ever established in Portugal, with the other located in Évora. This rarity makes it a notable example of this austere monastic order on the Iberian Peninsula.
