Centro Desportivo Nacional do Jamor, National sports center in Algés, Portugal
The Centro Desportivo Nacional do Jamor is a large sports complex in the Jamor Valley, west of Lisbon, bringing together several facilities on a park-like campus. It contains a main athletics stadium, swimming pools, tennis courts, football pitches, and running tracks spread across the grounds.
The complex opened in 1944 during the Estado Novo period, when the government invested heavily in large public sports infrastructure. The original buildings were designed by Francisco Caldeira Cabral, Konrad Weisner, and Miguel Jacobetty Rosa, and many of them are still standing today.
The grounds are regularly used by schools and clubs from across the country for training sessions and national competitions. Visitors often come across groups of young athletes moving between the fields and tracks.
The campus is large and best explored on foot, so wearing comfortable shoes and setting aside a good amount of time makes the visit easier. Some areas may be closed to the public depending on ongoing training sessions or events.
The main stadium has no stand on its east side, giving it an open shape that was unusual for stadiums built in the 1940s. This means part of the Jamor Valley is visible directly from inside the arena.
