Prado do Repouso Cemetery, Historic cemetery in Bonfim, Porto, Portugal
Prado do Repouso is a historic cemetery in the Bonfim neighborhood of Porto, Portugal. It covers about 10 hectares and contains individual graves, family plots, a columbarium, and a chapel that serves as a small mausoleum.
The cemetery opened in December 1839 on the grounds of a former 16th-century estate called Quinta do Prado do Bispo. It was created to move burials outside the city's crowded churches, following a practice that was spreading across Europe at the time.
Since 2005, the cemetery has held official status as a monumental cemetery, and since 2010 it has been part of the European Route of Cemeteries. Walking its paths, visitors pass the graves of poets, painters, and musicians who shaped life in Porto.
The cemetery is open every day and easy to reach by metro at Campo 24 de Agosto or by bus. The paths are well kept and simple to follow, so visitors can walk through without any prior knowledge of the layout.
The grave of poet Eugénio de Andrade was designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, one of the most recognized names in modern Portuguese architecture. Also buried here is Aurélio da Paz dos Reis, one of the first people to make films in Portugal.
