Igreja dos Anjos

Igreja dos Anjos is a parish church in the Arroios neighborhood featuring a distinctive Neoclassical facade paired with elaborate Baroque interiors. The interior spaces were transferred from the original building and create a striking contrast with the exterior design.

An original chapel was founded in 1563 but demolished in 1908 to make way for Avenida Almirante Reis. The current building was completed in 1911 and has defined the neighborhood since then.

The church houses a notable collection of 16th-century artworks, including a Mannerist painting showing Saint Irene healing Saint Sebastian. These pieces originate from the original chapel and reflect the site's long artistic tradition.

The church is administered by the Patriarchate of Lisbon and offers regular services for visitors and worshippers. It is easily accessible and centrally located in the neighborhood with good public transport connections.

Baroque elements from the original 17th and 18th century building were preserved during reconstruction and are now integrated into the interior of the new structure. This creates an interesting bridge between two different architectural periods and shows how religious spaces were saved during urban changes.
