The church construction began in the early 18th century under Archbishop D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles, with design implementation by Portuguese sculptor and architect André Soares.
The church includes a central throne depicting Saint Mary Magdalene and serves as a primary location for religious ceremonies and processions on July 22.
