St. Michael's Cathedral

St. Michael's Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral in Alba Iulia built of brick with dimensions of 83 meters long and 38 meters wide. Two towers on the southern side and a central spire define its silhouette above the city.

The first church began in 1009 under Stephen I of Hungary, with a second structure added at the end of the 11th century. This growth reflects how the settlement and its religious importance expanded over generations.

The southern entrance displays Romanesque ornaments that connect the building to episcopal authority and faith. These details reveal how the cathedral functioned as a center of religious power in the medieval community.

The Lászai Chapel was added in 1512 and marks the first Renaissance architectural element in Transylvania. It contains reliefs depicting biblical figures and Hungarian kings.
