Kemény-Bánffy castle in Luncani, Cluj

The Kemény-Bánffy Castle is a Baroque residence with 44 rooms situated near the Aranyos river and a Protestant church. The multi-story structure combines architectural elements from different periods into a substantial manor house.

The castle was first documented in 1268 when the Gerendi family held it, and it faced disruption during the Turkish invasion of 1597. Later ownership by various noble families led to its current name association with the Bánffy line.

The castle reflects how Transylvanian noble families lived and conducted their affairs across generations. The building shows how wealthy landowners expressed their status and power through grand architecture.

The site is currently abandoned and in a condition requiring restoration work, so visits should be approached with caution. Approaching from the village side and using the nearby church as a landmark helps with orientation.

The property passed through the hands of several notable families including Jósika, Sarmasaghy, and Klebelsberg before becoming associated with the Bánffy name. This succession of owners reflects the shifting fortunes and connections within Transylvanian nobility.
