Ascension Cathedral

Ascension Cathedral is a brick-built church designed in classicist style located in the heart of Satu Mare. Two tall towers frame the entrance while a central dome crowns the structure, creating a symmetrical and ordered appearance.

Construction began in 1830 under architect József Hild's direction as part of a broader religious building program. This structure replaced an earlier building that occupied the same site.

The cathedral functions as the main place of worship for Catholics in the region and shapes the religious rhythm of the local community. It stands as a focal point for faith-based gatherings and celebrations.

The cathedral sits at Piața Libertăţii in the town center, making it easy to reach on foot from surrounding areas. Visitors should plan their arrival around service times, as the building is used daily for religious functions.

The interior blends neoclassical lines with baroque ornaments, creating an unexpected mix of two different building traditions. Ceiling paintings and a central chandelier add decorative layers that visitors often overlook from outside.
