Teatrul de Nord, Historic theatre in Satu Mare, Romania.
Teatrul de Nord is a theatre in Satu Mare with neoclassical design, a central dome, and a three-part facade accommodating 440 spectators in its main auditorium. The main building houses 365 seats in the primary section, while the attached Ács Alajos Studio offers 50 seats for smaller productions.
This theatre opened in January 1889 and replaced an earlier building from 1848. Commemorative coins, documents, and theatre records were sealed within its foundation walls as a time capsule.
The theatre operates with two separate departments that present shows in Romanian and Hungarian languages. Both language communities find performances here that reflect their local traditions.
The building is split between two performance spaces, with the larger audience capacity in the main hall. Plan your visit based on the type of production you want to see, since smaller shows happen in the studio.
When built in 1889, workers deliberately placed coins, documents, and theatre records into the foundation walls as a historical archive. This sealed time capsule remains hidden within the structure to this day.
