Bran Castle, Gothic castle in Bran, Romania
Bran Castle is a stone fortress perched on a 200-foot (60-meter) cliff, with several towers, interior courtyards, and hidden passages connecting different levels. The structure combines medieval defensive elements with later residential spaces adapted for royal living.
The Teutonic Order raised a wooden fortification in 1212, replaced by a stone fortress built by Saxon settlers in 1377. In the 20th century, the structure served as a royal residence before becoming a public museum after World War II.
The royal resident furnished the interior with handcrafted furniture, textiles, and ceramics showcasing traditional Romanian crafts. Visitors today still see the original arrangements in the rooms, reflecting the daily life of an early 20th-century European monarch.
The museum welcomes visitors daily, with longer hours in summer than in winter, and tickets can be purchased online in advance. The structure sits on steep terrain, so wear comfortable shoes and expect stairs throughout your visit.
An elevator inside transports visitors through different historical periods using multimedia presentations and sound effects. This installation blends modern technology with the medieval setting, making the journey through centuries feel more tangible.
