Bálványos Castle, Medieval fortification in Turia, Romania.

The stone castle stands at 1056 meters elevation on a steep hill where the Turia and Bodoc mountains meet in Covasna County.

Built during the reign of King Stephen I, the castle served as a stronghold for the Apor family until their departure in the 17th century.

The name Bálványos derives from Hungarian, referring to the castle's connection to pagan practices that persisted after Christianity spread through Hungary.

Visitors can reach the castle ruins through marked hiking trails that lead through the surrounding Ciomad-Balvanyos natural protected area.

According to records from 1307, Otto of Bavaria lost his crown to Kán László at this location during a power transition in Hungarian history.
