Sólyom-kő, Nature reserve in Romania
Sólyom-kő is a nature reserve located west of Tusnádfürdő along the right bank of the Olt River, rising as a volcanic plateau to 824 meters in elevation. The terrain features rocky slopes, diverse vegetation, and multiple trails that lead to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valley and distant hills.
The plateau contains ruins of an ancient fort at its summit, showing evidence of human settlement from distant periods. These archaeological remains reveal that the location served as a strategic point through the centuries.
The name comes from the hawks that once soared above these cliffs and held significance in local stories and traditions. Today, people visit to observe wildlife and connect with the geological history that shaped this landscape.
Access is via a trail marked with a red triangle, with parking and picnic areas near the entrance. Wear sturdy footwear as the paths can be rocky and uneven in places.
The reserve protects Teleki's Hawkweed, a rare plant with yellow flowers found only in the rock crevices of this location. This endemic species exists nowhere else in the world, making the site particularly valuable for conservation.
