Castrum Praetorium

Castrum Praetorium, Ancient Roman fort in Mehadia, Romania.

Description

Castrum Praetorium is an ancient Roman fort built from stone and wood with a rectangular layout measuring roughly 116 meters wide and 143 meters long. The complex covered about 1.6 hectares and sat at an elevation of approximately 180 meters in a strategically important location.

History

The fort was founded in the 2nd century AD and served multiple Roman legions including units of IV Flavia Felix, V Macedonica, and XIII Gemina. This military presence was part of the defense line that protected the Roman Empire against threats from the north.

Culture

The remains show how Roman soldiers lived at the edge of the empire and used the fortifications to protect the region. You can still see how this place fit into the broader defense strategy of the Roman province.

Practical

The site sits about 3 kilometers north of Mehadia and is accessible by following signs toward the Zidina area. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the remains are spread across uneven ground.

Did you know?

The location appears in the Tabula Peutingeriana, an ancient Roman road map that shows this fort was recognized as a strategic point in the defense line along the Danube. This mention demonstrates its importance within the broader Roman military network.
