Mehedinți Plateau Geopark is a protected natural area spanning hills, valleys, limestone formations, caves, forests, and pastures in southwestern Romania. The landscape combines diverse geographical features and habitats connected by ten marked hiking trails.
The protected area was established in 2004, incorporating 17 distinct nature reserves and numerous archaeological sites dating to Neolithic times. The region holds significant geological and archaeological importance reflecting its long human settlement.
Villages scattered throughout maintain traditional crafts that visitors can observe in daily life. The Topolnița monastic complex stands as an important spiritual landmark that has shaped the region's cultural identity for centuries.
Four information centers located in Sisești, Ponoarele, Obârșia Cloșani, and Cireșu help visitors plan their visits. These centers provide guidance and essential tips for navigating the different routes throughout the area.
A distinctive natural formation called God's Bridge in Ponoarele is the only natural stone bridge in Europe that permits vehicle traffic. This rare geological feature adds global significance to the area.
