The water tower in Drobeta-Turnu Severin is a cylindrical structure with medieval architectural elements such as battlements and spiral staircases. It rises to about 27 meters (89 feet) tall with a diameter of about 10 meters (33 feet).
Engineer Elie Radu designed this water distribution structure in 1910 and construction finished in 1913. It was among the first reinforced concrete buildings in Eastern Europe of that era.
The tower displays exhibits about Ada Kaleh island heritage through historical photographs and interactive presentations that bring local history to life for visitors.
The interior is accessible by elevator or stairs, with about 400 steps provided if you choose to climb. Visitors should note that the stairs are steep and sturdy footwear is recommended.
During World War I, German forces used this structure as an observation post because of its vantage point over the Danube River. This military role remains an interesting chapter in the local wartime history.
