Cheile Turzii

Cheile Turzii is a limestone gorge in the Apuseni Mountains where the Hășdate River cuts through steep rock walls. The rock formations were shaped over millions of years by water and the earth's movements.

People lived in the caves here from Neolithic times through the Roman period, as archaeological finds show. These early inhabitants used the shelter that the rocks provided.

The place is tied to local stories that center on the rock formations and natural caves scattered throughout. You can feel this connection to the land as you walk through and see how the landscape shapes the tales people tell.

The gorge is best explored on foot since the paths are narrow and winding. Wear good shoes and bring water, as there is little shade and few resting spots along the way.

The place is home to hundreds of plant and animal species, some found nowhere else in the world. These rare creatures are adapted to the special conditions of the gorge.
