Satchinez swamps

The Satchinez swamps span 1,194 hectares of wetlands, ponds, and meadows along the Ier River at the intersection of three plains in western Romania.

Romanian ornithologist Dionisie Linția established the protected area in 1942, marking the beginning of formal conservation efforts for this wetland ecosystem.

The reserve concentrates 40 percent of Romania's bird species, earning its designation as the second most important ornithological site after the Danube Delta.

Visitors can observe 167 bird species, including 42 endemic European species, across the permanent wetlands, reedbeds, and surrounding hayfields throughout the year.

The protected area maintains remnants of the original Banat Plain swamps, supporting 93 aquatic plant species and 875 insect species within its boundaries.
