Mănăstirea Bezdin

Mănăstirea Bezdin is a Serbian Orthodox monastery with a brick church in Byzantine style, featuring three apses and an ornate iconostasis. The religious complex includes numerous rooms for monks and visitors, a chapel, and a dining hall set along the right bank of the Mureș River.

The monastery was founded in 1539 by Iovan Iaksici from Nadlac and has served the regional Orthodox community ever since. During Ottoman occupation of the Banat region, it endured attacks but survived to remain an important center for Serbian faith.

The monastery maintains Serbian Orthodox traditions through daily religious services and displays a venerated icon of the Mother of God from Mount Athos. Visitors can observe how the community lives and practices its faith within these walls.

The monastery sits west of Arad along the Mureș River and is accessible by road from the city. Visitors should dress appropriately as this is an active religious community and respect scheduled service times when visiting.

The monastery takes its name from the Bezdin stream, which creates reed-filled wetland areas on the property's western section. This natural feature adds to the setting and supports local bird populations in the landscape.
