Ioan Slavici Classical Theatre, Classical theatre in Arad, Romania.
The Ioan Slavici Classical Theatre is a neoclassical building in Arad housing two separate performance departments. Together, these spaces host a wide variety of productions ranging from classical drama to experimental works and shows for children.
The building was designed by Hungarian architect Anton Czigler in 1862, with construction supervised by Antal Szkalnitzky. It opened to the public in 1874 and has served the community since.
The venue is named after a Romanian writer and functions as a gathering space where theatre lovers come together throughout the year. Puppet shows and experimental works sit alongside traditional plays, showing how the house welcomes multiple artistic voices.
Visit during a performance to experience the building at its liveliest, as the office hours during weekdays are quite limited. Weekend visits are better if you want to see the venue when activity is high.
The theatre maintains ongoing relationships with partner venues across the Balkans and eastern Mediterranean, regularly exchanging performances and artists. These connections allow for creative collaborations that bring international perspectives to the local stage.
