Huniade Castle

Huniade Castle is a medieval fortress in Timișoara with massive stone walls, four cylindrical corner towers, and a square inner courtyard. The compound now contains the National Museum of Banat, with exhibition halls displaying regional artifacts, artwork, and scientific collections that document the area's past.

Italian architect Paolo Santini de Duccio built this fortress between 1443 and 1447 under the direction of John Hunyadi. The new structure replaced an earlier fortification that had stood on this site since 1315.

The National Museum of Banat housed within displays regional handicrafts, artwork, and household items that show how people lived across different periods. These collections reveal the daily customs and skills that shaped the community over centuries.

The castle is open to visitors during museum hours, with guided tours available in multiple languages by prior arrangement. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the interior courtyards and stairs have uneven surfaces and stone pathways.

Two decorative lanterns stand in front of the castle, marking Timișoara's place in European history. The city became the first in Europe to have electric street lighting in 1884.
