Măgura Uroiului Project, Archaeological site and nature reserve near Simeria, Romania
Măgura Uroiului Project is an archaeological site and nature reserve near Simeria that covers a 300-meter tall rock outcrop. The location features steep escarpments facing the Mureș and Strei rivers, with several flat areas at its base.
The site contains remains from Bronze Age, Hallstatt, and La Tène settlements, plus remnants of a Roman villa. It was later adapted for World War II fortifications.
Researchers examine artifacts and structures to understand how ancient communities developed their social systems and interacted with the surrounding landscape over different time periods.
The site welcomes visitors interested in archaeology and nature, with guided tours available through research partnerships. Best visiting times are the warmer months when excavations are active and trails are easy to walk.
Researchers discovered Dacian scale armor here that shows a transitional form between lamellar and hanging scales not seen elsewhere in Romanian archaeology. This armor type reveals something distinctive about local military equipment.
