Mausoleum of Mărășești, War memorial mausoleum in Mărășești, Romania.
The Mausoleum of Mărășești is a war memorial in the town of Mărășești in Vrancea County, Romania, honoring soldiers who fell during the 1917 battle. The structure rises in an octagonal form with several terraces and is crowned by a round tower topped with a cross.
Construction began in 1923 and continued for 15 years until King Carol II inaugurated the monument in 1938. It was built to remember the soldiers who fought during the Battle of Mărășești in the summer of 1917 against advancing forces.
Visitors walk through vaulted corridors below the building where Romanian soldiers from the First World War rest in stone crypts. Carved reliefs on the walls show scenes from the 1917 fighting and remind those who pass of the young men who never returned home.
The complex includes a museum displaying uniforms, weapons and personal belongings from the First World War period. Visitors can enter the crypt and explore the galleries where the burial chambers are located.
Four bronze eagles sit on the arms of the cross at the top and face the four cardinal directions. The structure contains over 160 burial chambers spread along 18 underground corridors.
