Annunciation Church, Sibiu, Orthodox church in central Sibiu, Romania.
Annunciation Church is an Orthodox place of worship in central Sibiu with a western spire that rises about 40 meters (131 feet) and is divided into three distinct levels. The structure displays carefully detailed architectural elements on the facade and roof work that give the building its characteristic appearance.
The church was built between 1788 and 1789 with funding from Stana Hagi Petru Luca but required complete reconstruction after an earthquake damaged it in October 1802. In 1856, the remains of the founders were placed beneath the altar in a ceremony ordered by Bishop Andrei Șaguna.
The church displays oil paintings of three founders above the entrance and houses an iconostasis created by artist Mișu Popp from Brașov. These artworks shape the interior and reflect the regional craft traditions.
The church is located in the old town and is easy to reach on foot. The cemetery behind it is freely accessible and offers a quiet place to explore and read the gravestones.
The tower was rebuilt after its collapse in 1802 with improved construction methods and shows processing techniques from the early modern period. Its restoration was a remarkable technical achievement for its time.
