Central Market Hall in Ploiești, Historic market hall in Ploiești, Romania.
The Central Market Hall in Ploiești is a historic structure with a square main hall of about 50 meters on each side, topped by a large concrete and glass dome. The multi-story building houses basement storage areas, ground floor vendor stalls, and an upper balcony level dedicated to cheese, cold cuts, and dairy products.
Construction took place between 1930 and 1935 under architect Toma T. Socolescu. King Carol II attended the official opening ceremony on November 1, 1935.
The market reflects how local people organize their shopping around specialized sections for flowers, fish, and dairy products that shape daily routines. You can observe these traditional trade patterns still active in how vendors and customers move through the different zones.
The building features a tower with a clock at the southeast corner that serves as a landmark for orientation. The layout spreads across multiple levels, so plan to walk through different floors to see all the vendor sections.
The facade combines red brick with concrete elements in a striking way that was modern for its time. This blend of materials gave the building a distinctive look that set it apart from other market halls of that era.
