Bârsana Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Maramureș County, Romania
Bârsana Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Bârsana commune, Maramureș County, Romania, built with multiple timber structures. The Church of the Twelve Apostles reaches about 57 meters in height and was raised between 1993 and 1995.
A document from 1326 mentions the Bârsana settlement when Hungarian King Charles of Anjou granted land rights. The present monastic complex arose in the late 20th century on the site of an older place.
The community works with local woodcarvers who pass their techniques to apprentices. The summer altar hosts outdoor ceremonies when weather permits.
The site sits roughly 20 kilometers from Sighetu Marmației and opens year-round. Guided visits are offered and guests may attend religious services.
The entrance gate displays traditional Maramureș carvings showing biblical scenes. Separate houses shelter workshops where masters craft icons and sacred objects.
