Poiana Mărului Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Băltăgari, Romania
Poiana Mărului Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Bisoca that sits at the base of Mount Ulmușoru. The main church has a cross shape with an open porch held up by six wooden pillars, and the stone walls of the courtyard surround the sacred space.
The monastery was founded in 1730 by Constantin Mavrocordat, and the original wooden church burned down in 1771. It was rebuilt between 1780 and 1784 after this fire.
Religious paintings cover the interior wooden walls in neo-Byzantine style, showing the artistic skills brought by master craftsmen from different workshops. These artworks give you a sense of the spiritual beliefs and decorative traditions that shaped this sacred space over time.
The monastery can be reached by car from Râmnicu Sărat or Buzău by following route DJ204C across the Râmnicu Sărat river ford. Having your own transport is helpful since the mountain roads can be narrow and winding.
A wooden bell tower built in 1935 shows the skilled craftsmanship that continued after the 18th century rebuilding. The hexagonal towers of the main church feature elaborate iron window decorations that catch the light.
