Bukovinian Village Museum in Suceava, Open-air museum in Suceava, Romania.
The Bukovinian Village Museum is an open-air museum in Suceava where original wooden houses, churches, craft workshops, and farm buildings from across the Bukovina region have been relocated and reassembled on a single site. The grounds form a complete rural setting, with structures arranged along paths that connect different parts of the collection.
The museum was founded in the second half of the 20th century to save rural buildings from the Bukovina region that were at risk as village life changed. The oldest structure on the site is a church from the village of Vama, built in 1783.
Each building in the museum comes from a real village in the Bukovina region and still carries the marks of the people who once lived there. Walking through the interiors, visitors can see furniture, tools, and personal objects arranged as they would have been in daily use.
The museum is located next to Suceava Fortress, so both sites can easily be combined in a single visit. The paths between buildings are unpaved, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially after rain.
Some of the buildings on the site are still actively used, with craftspeople working inside them and making objects using traditional techniques. This means visitors can sometimes watch someone weaving or carving wood rather than only looking at finished objects.
