Teleki Castle, Baroque castle in Gornești, Romania
Teleki Castle is a Baroque residence in Gornești, Romania, built around a U-shaped layout that opens onto a central courtyard. The upper floor holds a grand salon decorated with original plasterwork, Rococo porcelain stoves, and three ornamental chandeliers.
Work on the castle began in 1772, led by architect Schmidt Pál, who directed the project without ever setting foot in Transylvania. Different craftsmen took over at different stages, and the building was completed over the course of several decades.
The rooms of the castle reflect the tastes of the Teleki family, who decorated their homes across Hungary and Transylvania in similar ways. The ornamental stoves and the salon on the upper floor give a clear sense of how noble families in the region lived and entertained.
The castle is currently under restoration, so access may be limited depending on the stage of the work. Checking current visiting conditions before you go is a good idea, as they can change from one period to the next.
Schmidt Pál designed the entire building without ever seeing the site in person, sending all instructions from a distance. This remote way of working helps explain why different craftsmen interpreted his plans in slightly different ways at each stage of the construction.
