Saint Michael Wooden Orthodox Church in Târgu Mureș

Saint Michael Wooden Orthodox Church is a rectangular wooden structure with a pentagonal apse and a roof covered in wooden shingles that give it a distinctive silhouette. A dual-bulbed bell tower rises above the building, making it easy to spot in the city.

Construction of the church began in 1793 following the loss of the community's previous religious building, which was transferred to the Greek-Catholic faith in 1761. This transfer forced the local Orthodox congregation to build a new home for their worship.

The interior displays religious artwork arranged in ways typical of Orthodox churches, with icons and decorative patterns that follow traditional rules. These decorations reflect local artistic practices that developed over centuries.

The celebrated Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu spent a night in the bell tower chamber during a journey in 1866. This experience in the tower later influenced some of his written works.
