National Theatre of Târgu Mureș

The National Theatre of Târgu Mureș is a performance venue with multiple stages for different theatrical forms. The building houses a main hall with 600 seats, a studio space with flexible seating, and an underground hall for contemporary productions.

The institution was founded in 1946 with the establishment of the Tompa Miklós Company, and the building opened in 1978. This development from a theatre company to an established venue reflects the growth of cultural life in the city.

The theatre presents productions in Romanian and Hungarian, reflecting the multicultural character of the Transylvanian region. This bilingual approach shapes the cultural life of the city and creates a meeting point for different communities.

The theatre is centrally located in Târgu Mureș and easily reached on foot. The different performance spaces within the building are arranged so visitors can find the right hall quickly.

This is the only national theatre in the country that operates two companies with separate season programs simultaneously. The joint management allows close collaboration between the Romanian and Hungarian artists.
