Târgu Mureș, Municipality and county capital in Transylvania, Romania.
Târgu Mureș lies along the Mureș River at 320 meters (1050 feet) elevation and forms the administrative and economic center of Mureș County in Transylvania. The city spreads on both sides of the river, with wide boulevards and residential districts that developed from the historic core.
The settlement was first recorded in 1230 and received royal status as a town in 1616. Over the centuries it grew into an important market town for Transylvania, drawing traders from across the region.
The name comes from Hungarian words for market and fortress, pointing to its roots as a trading center. Today residents speak both languages in daily life, and shops serve customers in Romanian and Hungarian equally.
The center is easy to explore on foot, with most sights within a walkable area. The international Transilvania Airport sits 16 kilometers (10 miles) outside and connects the city to several European destinations.
The town hall and many public buildings display signage and announcements in both languages side by side on the same boards. This bilingualism extends to street names, where two designations often label the same location.
