Castle of Târgu Mureș

The Castle of Târgu Mureș is a fortified complex in Transylvania with robust stone walls, multiple bastions, and reinforced gates surrounding a central courtyard. The structure spans substantial grounds and displays defensive architecture from several historical periods.

Prince Stefan Bathory commissioned the construction of this fortress in 1492 to protect a Franciscan monastery and the local population. The complex was later expanded and adapted to new defensive technologies, reflecting its changing military role over time.

The fortress houses several museums displaying regional artifacts and traditional clothing that represent both Romanian and Hungarian heritage. Visitors can follow the shared history of these two cultures through rotating exhibitions throughout the complex.

The grounds are open to visitors daily, with guided tours available in Romanian, Hungarian, and English. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is expansive and involves multiple levels throughout the complex.

The bastion preserves firing holes for cannons integrated into its walls, demonstrating medieval military engineering. These details are often overlooked but are clearly visible along the southern outer walls.
