Lutheran church in Cisnădie, Sibiu

The Lutheran church in Cisnădie is a fortified place of worship built with Gothic elements and thick protective walls surrounded by towers and a moat. The structure displays the blend of religious space and defensive facility, typical of Saxon fortresses.

The church began as a Romanesque basilica in the 12th century and was rebuilt and reinforced in the 15th century to protect the Saxon settlers. This transformation reflects the growing insecurity of the region and the need to fortify communities.

The church carries the name of its Saxon community and displays a significant three-part altarpiece from 1520 inside, created by the workshop of Veit Stoss. This work reflects the religious artistic traditions that flourished among the settlers of this region.
