Reserva Fânațele Clujului, Nature reserve north of Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Reserva Fânațele Clujului is a nature reserve with meadows at about 500 meters elevation, featuring many wildflowers, grasses, and butterflies across its terrain. The landscape contains distinctive landforms created by ancient geological shifts and supports varied plant and animal life.
The reserve was established as a protected area in 1931 to safeguard land that had long served as traditional pastures in Transylvania. This protection preserved the ecological character of the region for future generations.
The southern section is called Copârșaie, a name from Hungarian meaning coffin, referring to distinctive mounds created by ancient landslides visible in the landscape. This name choice reflects how the land's geology shaped local naming traditions.
Visitors can follow marked trails throughout the reserve and find informational panels at the entrance explaining the landscape and wildlife. Spring and summer offer the best conditions for seeing plants and butterflies.
The reserve hosts plant species typically found in Asian steppes and southeastern Ukraine, traces of a warmer and drier climate from earlier geological periods. These surviving plants reveal how dramatically the regional climate has shifted over time.
