Golubac, Medieval fortress on the Danube River banks in Serbia

The stone fortress extends along steep cliffs with ten defensive towers positioned strategically to control the Danube River passage through Iron Gate gorge.

First documented in 1335, the fortress changed ownership between Serbian, Hungarian, and Ottoman forces due to its position controlling vital trade routes.

The fortress name derives from the Serbian word golub meaning dove, reflected in different historical maps as Galambas, Galambocz, and Colombazo.

Visitors can explore three distinct compounds within the fortress walls, each featuring specific architectural elements from different construction periods.

The Hat Tower, standing as the tallest structure in the inner fort, contains multiple levels connected by restored medieval staircases.
