Jelica

Jelica is a mountain range that stretches across the landscape with several peaks of varying heights, topped by Crna Stena at its highest point. The slopes feature marked hiking paths that link different summits and pass through woodlands and streams that run across the terrain.

The archaeological site of Gradina contains remains of fortified settlements from the early Iron Age, showing that people have lived in this mountain region for thousands of years. These ancient structures provide evidence of organized communities that once thrived in this location.

The two monasteries of Stjenik and Ježevica from the 14th century serve as spiritual centers where locals and pilgrims gather for worship and celebration. These sites reflect the deep Orthodox Christian identity that shapes life in this mountain region.

Hikers should wear proper footwear and check marked trails before setting out, as the paths vary in difficulty across the mountain. Mountain weather can change quickly, so it is wise to bring plenty of water and dress in layers for changing conditions.

The northern sections of the mountain are covered with dense woodlands and numerous streams that form a natural boundary between two regional landscapes. These waterways shape the ecosystem and make the northern area particularly green and verdant.
