Sićevo Gorge

Sićevo Gorge, Protected gorge near Niš, Serbia.

Sićevo Gorge is a limestone canyon in Serbia that cuts through the landscape between two mountain ranges, shaped by the Nišava River flowing through it. Steep rocky walls rise on both sides, creating different sections that can be explored on marked trails and climbing routes.

The gorge once carried the Via Militaris, an ancient Roman road linking Constantinople to Central Europe that ran through this valley. Medieval monasteries were later established here, becoming important religious and cultural centers for centuries.

Medieval Orthodox monasteries are woven into the landscape, offering visible connections between the natural surroundings and spiritual life. These religious structures show how sacred places were built to blend with the land and the river below.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for exploring, when temperatures are milder for hiking and climbing. The main access point is within reasonable distance of Niš, with marked routes available for different experience levels.

The gorge is home to some of the last nesting golden eagles in Serbia, a rare sight that marks the area's conservation importance. Unusual plant species like Serbian Ramonda grow here, found nowhere else in significant numbers.
